Apple tipped to bring home automation features to iPhone

5:05 PM

According to a report in the Financial Times, Apple will bring home automation features to the iPhone family. The Cupertino giant is expected to showcase the new functionality at WWDC which kicks off next week, on June 2.

The new functionality will allow iOS users to control home features such as security systems, lighting fixtures, and appliances. NFC, a long-rumored feature which is set to arrive in the next iPhone could be utilized to connect the handset with the aforementioned home fixtures.

Regarding compatible devices, Apple is reportedly working with a select bunch of hardware manufacturers to create certified products. The setup will be similar to the “Made for iPhone” label, though it is expected to feature a brand new logo.

Overall, it appears that home automation will be the next major frontier in the rivalry between Apple and Google. Earlier this year, the search giant made quite a splash on its own in the field by purchasing Nest for $3.2 billion.
